Five fun Italian facts every foodie will love!
If you love Italian food as much as we do, here are 5 fun Italian food facts:
1) The Pizza was served as a flatbread until 18th century when Princess Margherita toured Italy and was in Naples. She loved the flatbreads so much she asked her chef to prepare different flavours and toppings. He decided to make one with the Italian flag colours from Mozzarella, tomato and basil. Thus, giving it the name “Pizza Margherita”. As the owner of Dom’s and our chefs come from Naples, we can confidently say we’re great at making Neopolitan pizzas. We may be biased, so come try for yourself.
2) Pasta is considered the most important food in Italy with a few hundred different shapes, sizes and styles of pasta. The term “pasta” simply means “paste” (as it’s a paste of water, flour and egg). Traditionally, pasta is always served as a starter which is why we have started and main options for pasta on the menu!
3) Italians are known to prepare dishes using ingredients that are not often eaten in the UK. For example, snails, horse, goat, rabbit, sea urchin, sea snails and squid. Sounding a bit strange? Not to worry! We don’t serve any of this at Dom’s - unless you like crispy calamari and squid served with aioli and fresh lemon.
4) As you know, Italians take their food very seriously with the main meal being lunch time - “Il Pranzo”. The meal begins with the antipasti, before primo piatto and secondo piatto (first and second course). Next, the fruit (la frittata), maybe a dessert (dolce) and finally the espresso. If this sounds like your idea of heaven, Dom’s is open from 12pm - 10:30pm every day of the week! So join us for a large lunch, light dinner or just a coffee!
5) Before eating, you will have noticed that Italians like to say “buon appetito” which translates to “good appetite”. You wish everyone a good appetite in the hope that they enjoy their meal.
